Mumbai, which was previously known as Bombay is a major metropolitan city of India. It is the state capital of Maharashtra . Mumbai city is known as the business capital of India, it being the country's principal financial and communications centre. The city has the largest and the busiest port handling India's foreign trade and a major Interntional airport. India's largest Stock Exchange which ranks as the third largest in the world, is situated in Mumbai. Here, trading of stocks is carried out in billions of rupees everyday.

Discription about Mumbai/Bombay can not be complete without the mention of Bollywood, the biggest Indian film industry which churns out hundreds of Hindi block-busters every year.
 
HISTORY OF OUR MUMBAI
 
The name Mumbai of this city is derived from the name of the goddess 'Mumbadevi'. This city is a union of seven small islands, naming 'Mahim, Colaba, Small Colaba, Mazgaon, Worli, Parel and Matunga. Kolis (Fisherman) are the original inhabitants of these islands. Today also these Fishermen do live here in Mumbai Islands. From these island Colaba, Mazgaon & Mahim were important in all respect. The Goddess of the fisherman is 'Mumba Aai' British started calling Mumbai.

Today Mumbai has become a great city - extended up to Dahisar in western and up to Mulund in Central.

Famous Geologist Pitolami in 150 A.D. discovered Mumbai. During the period of B.C. 273-232 Maurya - during the period of B.C. 810-1260 Shilahar ruled in Mumbai to Portugals for the yearly tax of 85 Pounds. After this British as well as Dutch also visited Mumbai. Mabaris from Kerala also came to Mumbai & Settled at the place now called as Malbar Hill. On the Occasion of Marriage of British Prince Charles with Portugal Princes Cathrine Briganza, 'Mumbai' was gifted to British King in 23.6.1661. After this in 250 years Mumbai has undergone many changes. Slowly all these seven islands together turn in to a city. From 1668 Mumbai was under the rule of East India Company.

First railway was started in 1853 from Mumbai to Thane. In 1857 British entered into the imperialism & in 1862 by demolishing the old constructions, buildings & forts they started building new planned construction. In 1870 Mumbai was linked with Calcutta.
